The clear opening is the internal size of the grate that generally matches the pit or channel underneath and is the size that the water travels through.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If using a precast GRC pit or channel, determine the size of this and you\u2019ll find a grate to suit.<\/li>\n<li>If you are going to form a channel or pit on site, it\u2019s important you choose a grate prior to beginning this work to ensure there is something off the shelf. Of course, we can manufacture a custom grate; however the price difference is great.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure you review the product drawings and allow for the overall frame size and a suitable rebate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n<\/div><br \/>\n<\/div><br \/>\n<div class=\"column-group columns-2\"><br \/>\n<div class=\"column column-number-1 column-span-1\"><p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1706\" src=\"http:\/\/mascotengineering.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/grating-how-to-choose-rating.jpg\" alt=\"grating-how-to-choose-rating\" width=\"214\" height=\"156\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div><br \/>\n<div class=\"column column-number-2 last column-span-1\"><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Load rating and the environment<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Is the grate located in a trafficable area? Even if an area isn\u2019t designed for vehicular traffic, it\u2019s important to bear in mind possible delivery vehicles etc.<\/li>\n<li>AS3996 is a standard covering load ratings and is a tool to help you choose the correct grating for your application. For information see the load ratings page on this website.<\/li>\n<li>What will the finished surface look like? Does it matter if the grate is galvanised mild steel (silver) or cast iron (black)?<\/li>\n<li>Is the area open to pedestrian traffic or a public space? If yes, you might want to consider a heelproof product.<\/li>\n<li>Bicycles? Wheelchairs? If either will be used in the area, the width of bar spacing as well as bar direction should be considered.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\n<\/div><br \/>\n<\/div><br \/>\n<div class=\"column-group
